The broader neighbourhood of the Pázmány Péter Catholic University Campus is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The historic setting of the Palace Quarter, an urban milieu embracing and continuously renewing the past, is conducive to high culture and its prominent institutions. Development of the campus will not only result in an up-to-date university infrastructure but also makes the complex a built indicator of the spiritual and intellectual concentration that will be generated here. The proposed location and function require an architectural attitude representing conceptional and historical continuity, which looks to the future but builds on the legacy of the past. A people-friendly architectural environment, involving traditional materials and forms, creates human-scale transitional spaces which can become the site of personal encounters, so important in university life. With the demolition of the largely disused stock of buildings, a compact educational complex will be created within the area, removing the oppressive embrace of Late Modern additions from the palaces and creating new open spaces along the street fronts.
