There are few architects who have had the opportunity to design every development of the same establishment for about forty years. The Kecskemét Health Centre is the end product of a several decade long building process, where the architect has tried to preserve the uniform architectural image of the hospital in all stages of design. A hospital complex, with the size of district, has been built on the former marshland and it still has areas in reserve for later developments.
The Nyíri Road site of the hospital in Kecskemét was completed in December 1980, but some departments of the hospital remained at the older Izsáki Road site, which was unsuitable for extensions. For the next 35 years, the Nyíri Road site has been continuously extended with new functions, such as the buildings of the county’s central ambulance station, the financial department of the hospital, warehouses and garage buildings, the county’s new specialist clinic, as well as a so called hotel wing.
As part of the latest development, a new, T-form building has been built on the garden side of the road in front of the hotel wing, consisting of a basement, ground floor and four storeys. It accommodates the mother and child centre, the cardiovascular centre, the pulmonology and the otolaryngology departments. Above the promenade in front of the hotel building, a new central lobby has been constructed on first floor level, with access to all the buildings of the hospital complex through indoor routes. There is a moving sidewalk to the foyer, starting close to the main entrance of the hospital, enclosed in a new steel and glass structure. Disabled people can get to the foyer by elevators. New digital X-ray and MR equipment have been installed on the first and the second floor of the building, within the framework of the modernization program for the medical imaging unit. The cytodiagnostics department, the isotope laboratory, the EEG- and ultrasound examination rooms, the digital X-ray, as well as the blood and urine test laboratory have been relocated from Izsáki Road to the newly constructed third floor of the specialist clinic. The enlarged building fully meets the diagnostic needs of outpatients. The main entrance gatehouse of the hospital complex on Nyíri Street, with the elegant new gate structure, lives up to the prestige of the institute.
In the 1980s, following ministerial instructions, the buildings were designed using pre-fabricated, large concrete panels made by a new factory in Kecskemét. In contrast, the well-insulated facades of the new building have large, glazed, sun protected surfaces, corresponding to the modern technical standards. The mostly white walls with the light grey doors and windows, brightened by an orange strip along the ground floor cornice, fit well into the rythm of the blocks of older buildings. Thanks to the large, glazed surfaces, every ward and consulting room has a view of the landscaped park, the calm environment gives additional psycholgical support to healing. The rearranged main entrances, the walkways with trees and benches, the materials used indoors and outdoors, as well as the colors are intended to strengthen and support the patient friendly ambience, the timelessness and the prestige of the public building.
