The multistorey car park for 235 cars, located close to the Castle District, has been built to relieve the parking difficulties of downtown Sopron and the Castle District. The partly covered, curved building has been uniformly clad with ceramic louvres that fit to the historic surroundings. Depending on the position of the viewer, they show a transparent or a solid looking facade of the uniquely shaped building.
The multistorey car park has been built on a plot of irregular, polygonal shape, created by demolitions of old buildings. It is endowed with public toilet blocks for the passengers of the tourist buses parking nearby. Reflecting to the local building regulation plan and the neighbourhood, the building is freestanding. The partly covered car park accommodates 235 cars, 26 motorcycles and 10 bicycles. Parking is arranged on five split level floors, with 2,60 m headroom; this system has resulted in comfortable ramps and uninterrupted one-way traffic. The louvred facade provides adequate natural ventilation. Owing to the high water table, the building has no underground floors.
The uniform, vertical ceramic louvre cladding of the curved facade is interrupted only on the southern side; the split-like openings on the ground floor clearly mark the pedestrian and vehicular entrances. The vertical visitor traffic system of the building (elevators+staircase) is also located on the southern side, traffic between the split levels takes place on separate stairs. The operational and service areas of the building are on the ground floor, as well as the large capacity public toilets for women, men and the physically challenged. There are fast charging stations for electric vehicles both on the ground floor and the upper floors.
With the exception of the steel structure staircase on the southern side, the car park building has a uniform reinforced concrete structure of walls, columns and slabs. The whole external facade is uniformly clad with vertical ceramic louvres providing 75% openwork surface, made of unglazed terracotta clay elements mounted on a steel structure. The southern part of the building is covered with an extensive green roof, while the northern part is completely open and the topmost parking level is bordered by a reinforced concrete parapet wall.
