Veszprém was European Capital of Culture in 2023. One of the related development projects was an underground car park that also included a multi-purpose community space, and the refurbishment of the university campus park while preserving, moreover inreasing the high proportion of green spaces.
The university campus is located close to the historic town center, next to the locally protected area, bordered by Erzsébet Park and Calvary Hill. It has significant green spaces, its vegetation -especially the valuable row of plane trees- is a decisive element of the cityscape. An important objective of the project was the reintegration of the almost 2,5 hectare university campus park, which had been originally surrounded by a fence, into the green space system of the town, facilitating a long-term solution for access and service traffic to the many cultural institutions in the area. The main elements of the project were an underground car park for 200 cars with an adjoining community space, and the renewal of landscaping in the whole campus. Pedestrian connection between the campus and the historic city center has been established; the valuable vegetation, historic cultural and landscape elements in the area have been preserved.
Besides the economical and functional aspects, the location of the underground car park has been greatly influenced by the characteristics of the site, the proximity of the parks, pedestrian zones and the downtown. The natural slope of the site helped the optimal layout of the building, with access ramp and minimal earthwork. The two parking floors are adjusted to the fall of the terrain with the most rational design possible, they are located side by side, with 120 cm difference in their floor levels. The two floors are connected by ramps on the north and south side, and also by a staircase and an elevator. The roof of the underground structure provides space for sports courts and other recreational areas. A pavilion of intermittent use has been built above the southern part of the car park, connected to the parking area by an elevator and a staircase. It accommodates a multi-purpose community space, which is a venue for university-related events aimed at enriching student life. The superstructure has two parts under the common roof, opening up as a kind of entrance gate to the rooftop sports and recreation areas, and marking the limit of the intensively used areas towards the south. The rest of the campus with its parkland is a place for quiet, peaceful relaxation.
The building is characterized by the unified and consistent use of building materials. The underground car park has painted concrete surfaces, the pavilion has been built with mounted steel structures. The seamed metal sheet cladding of the facade is interspersed with large glazed surfaces that can be opened.
