ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN COMPETITION – III. PRIZE
The design competition for the new terminal building of the Debrecen International Airport, its surroundings and the related service infrastructure aimed to develop a Schengen-compliant airport capable of serving 3 million passengers per year and offering the possibility of long-term expansion. The proposal by KÖZTI and UVATERV, which was awarded third place, is based on the efficient use of space, logical passenger flow, and a flexible structure that accommodates future pier extensions. On the landside, passangers are welcomed by a spacious, impressive public square and an urban frontage directly connected to public transport hubs and parking areas. The building’s two levels ensure efficient passenger flow by the clear separation of departing and arriving traffic, while the placement of the piers provides direct visual connection to the apron and the runway. The interior spaces are dimensioned according to IATA reference principles, ensuring an appropriate level of service while taking into account future expansion requirements. The terminal’s generous waiting areas are complemented by commercial and catering functions, a business lounge, co-working space, and a children’s corner. The architectural concept simultaneously meets the functional expectations of an up-to-date airport operation and the requirements for future capacity expansion, while offering a clean, well-organized spatial structure.
