As part of the new campus of the Pázmány Péter Catholic University, reconstruction of the Károlyi Palace has started. The building will accomodate the university library which will be open for all visitors. A sensational event was the discovery of some murals by Lotz Károly, which had been presumed perished by the preliminary research. Tima Zoltán, design director of KÖZTI and Kelemen Bálint project architect introduced the details of the reconstruction to hely.hu.
The Károlyi Palace, located behind the National Museum, is one of the less known masterpieces by architect Ybl Miklós. It has been utilized as a warehouse for decades and it will be renewed at last as part of the Pázmány Campus. KÖZTI introduced the building to hely.hu, including the Lotz frescoes believed to have been lost. These will regain their old glory together with the palace, and the public will be able to admire them after 2027.
The impressive building, located in the middle of Palotanegyed (Palace District), resembles the Opera House. This is no coincidence, it was designed by Ybl Miklós, who was the most important architect of the revival style in Hungary. The palace was built in 1863 for Count Károlyi Lajos. There is a loggia on its main facade with a driveway underneath, which detail can be regarded as one of the models for the Opera building.
The project is managed by KÖZTI and Hamburg C Kft. Hely.hu visited the site with Tima Zoltán, design director of KÖZTI and Kelemen Bálint project architect. More details about the history and future of Károlyi Palace can be found in the following link:
