IDEAS COMPETITION FOR STUDENTS 2024
Középülettervező Zrt. (as Organiser), in collaboration with BME Department of Public Building Design and the Municipality of II. District Budapest announces an ideas competition for students of Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Faculty of Architecture, for the design proposal of an urban space between Frankel Leó út and Török utca.
According to the american urban theorist Kevin Lynch, the essence of urban space is truly unfolded in time. In addition to architectural design, many historical, cultural and social influences leave their mark on the condition of an urban space, or even leave it incomplete. Space is a static entity that is nevertheless always changing and implies change. As time, trends, demands, materials and technologies continue to evolve, spaces are constantly reinterpreted. As a result of design and spontaneous evolution, we move through and along spaces of different qualities every day.
The segment of urban space between Frankel Leó út and Török utca in District II is also an example of a public space that has maintained its triangular shape for centuries. It is enclosed on both sides by a public transport system, yet it is easily accessible and is surrounded by a wide range of cultural and recreational facilities – although it does not leave a deep imprint on the mental map of the majority. However, it is an important reference point on the “map” of KÖZTI, as the square is defined on the south side by a “KÖZTI” building, the corner block designed in 1959 by architects Béla Pintér and József Köteles. On its ground floor operates the unit of the Szabó Ervin Library, which has its entire façade facing the square.
The intention is to raise awareness and interest, with either temporary or permanent interventions that can serve as a reference for the future revitalisation of similar small-scale unused spaces in the city fabric. The purpose of the competition is to generate new urban experience, new impressions, new ways of spatial use that can provide new content and a new image for the neighbourhood, the district or the wider urban environment.
