KÖZTI’s entry won third prize in the international architectural design competition for the new exhibition building of the Hungarian Natural History Museum in Debrecen. Well known Hungarian and international practices participated in the competition and 14 designs were submitted.
Call for entries to design the museum to be built in Nagyerdő (Great Forrest) in Debrecen was announced last September. The program included the design of the immediate surroundings of the building which had to be integrated into the Nagyerdő (Great Forrest), and a connection with the Cultural Park also had to be established. The Debrecen building of the Hungarian Natural History Museum will be one of the largest cultural and scientific projects in Hungary, which will give a huge boost to the development of the eastern part of the country, creating new opportunities in tourism, education and research.
The entries were judged by a jury of renowned experts. Bernert Zsolt, Director General of the Hungarian Natural History Museum and chairman of the jury, said, they had to judge very high quality entries, so it was not an easy task for them. The Director General believes that the prospective building will bring serious international recognition and it will enhance the tourist attraction of Debrecen. The Hungarian Museum of Natural History aims for the new exhibition building to become the number one showcase for environmental protection, biodiversity and sustainable development in Hungary, and also to create experiences that can appeal to hundreds of thousands of visitors year after year.
Those interested can view the entries for one week from March 31, 2025, on the ground floor of the Kölcsey Center in Debrecen, and then, according to plans, in Budapest, at the Hungarian Museum of Natural History.
