Results of the architecture competition for the renovation of the Zsámbék medieval church ruins and their environment have been announced. The winning design by KÖZTI has got the unanimous vote of the jury.
Call for the architecture competition ’Renovation of the Zsámbék medieval church ruins and their environment’ was announced by the Municipal Council of Zsámbék in the spring of 2023. Altogether 22 entries were submitted and KÖZTI won the 1st prize.
It is planned, that the monks of the Order of Prémontré at Zsámbék will move back close to the church. The design program includes the establishment of a new monastery building above the ruins of the old monastery or in close connection with it, even by reusing its original stones, on one or two floors – writes építészfórum.hu. The monastery will accommodate monk’s rooms, work rooms and guest rooms as well. An area closed off from the outside world, a so called clausure also has to be built.
The project puts great emphasis on development for tourism, so, in addition to the partial restoration of the monastery and the church in their original function, a new visitor center shall also be built, where a modern and exciting exhibition, installed with interactive and digital features, will present the history of the Order of Prémontré and that of the medieval church. Those stones of the present lapidarium which are not needed for the renovation will also be accommodated here, as well as a 120-180 person capacity conference hall. With all this development, 60,000 visitors per year can be expected.
